Public sector

Expert government training for the public sector

We help central government professionals understand exactly how their role fits into the wider system. This context builds confidence and strengthens collaborative relationships across the public sector.

We offer two ways to navigate the machinery of government:

  • Team training: Interactive group workshops delivered in-person or via MS Teams (view workshops)

  • Individual training: Online courses you can start immediately (view online courses)

Group workshops

Facilitated by Dr Ryan Malone, our group workshops provide a highly engaging learning experience for your team.

Delivery is flexible: choose a full-day face-to-face workshop at your premises, or two half-day sessions via MS Teams. The content and interaction are the same regardless of the format.

Choose from three workshops.

(1) The Insider’s Guide to NZ Government

The definitive introduction to the machinery of government

Our most popular course. Ideal for teams seeking a comprehensive overview of how Wellington works, including ministers, Parliament, and the public sector.

Workshop

Two wooden podiums with the New Zealand coat of arms, set in front of a black curtain and flanked by two Union Jack flags and a blue flag. This is the speaking podium at the Beehive Theatrette.

(2) The Insider’s Guide to Policy and Law-making

How policy decisions are made and scrutinised by Parliament

Designed from the perspective of officials, this course guides learners through the full policy process, Cabinet decision-making, and the scrutiny of legislation by the House and its committees. Comprehensive in scope, and highly relevant to day-to-day advisory work.

Workshop

Group of journalists holding microphones and recording devices during a press conference at Parliament.

(3) Making Friends with the OIA

Transforming compliance into confidence

Managing OIA requests can be complex and time-consuming. Yet many public servants are tasked with responding to requests without ever receiving formal training on the Act.

This training covers the Act’s key principles and processes, providing the necessary grounding to handle OIA requests with confidence.

Workshop

Official document titled 'Official Information Act 1982' with a coat of arms at the top, dated December 17, 1982.

Online courses

We also offer individual learning through our online courses. Learn at your own pace, wherever you are.

The Insider’s guide to NZ Government

This is the on-demand edition of our flagship Insider’s Guide to NZ Government workshop (see above). The content mirrors the workshop version, but offers total flexibility.

The course consists of five sessions of approximately one hour each. You can complete them at your own pace to fit your work schedule, with the option to set email reminders to keep you on track. Each session is highly engaging and includes quizzes, FAQs, and follow-up resources.

The sessions work on any web browser - whether you are at home, in the office, or hopefully on the embankment at the Basin Reserve.

Agencies can also purchase licence bundles (10, 25, or 50) at a reduced rate. Contact us for volume pricing.
