on demand course

The insider’s guide to NZ government has developed quite the reputation in Wellington. It’s become the go-to course to get your head around how government works.

While some people like to do it as a live Teams course, some people prefer the flexibility of doing it as an on demand course. The content is the same either way.

The on demand version of the course is divided into 5 sessions of roughly 1 hour each. The sessions are engaging, there are quizzes, FAQs and follow-up resources for each session.

Because the sessions are on demand, you can register and start the course whenever you like.

The on demand option gives you complete flexibility in terms of when and where you learn the machinery of government. Take your time, learn in short chunks, and pause and rewind to revisit material if you want. Easy.

The course has been fully updated to reflect the 2023 general election, the new government that’s taken office, and the current opposition parties in the House.

“I just wanted to send a quick email and say how beneficial I have found the sessions so far - they have been so informative and a huge support to me and my role! I also want to mention that having them online has allowed me to learn short and sharp segments of a day course, when I want and where I want - it’s brilliant! I learn better in a slower environment so being allowed the space to soak in the session content before moving onto the next segment really suited me. Thanks for rolling this out to everyone!”

How it works

The fee is $450 + gst per person. Agencies can also buy bundles of licences at a reduced fee (get in contact and we’ll get you pricing info).

We take care of all the technicals at our end. Once your register, you’ll receive automatic email access to the 5 sessions that make up the course. And away you go. People can access the sessions through any browser, whether they’re at home, in the office or, hopefully, on the embankment at the Basin Reserve.

Who is the course for?

The course is great for anyone new to government (or thinking about it), or if you’ve recently changed roles and need a deeper understanding of the machinery of government. And even if you’re a seasoned veteran of the public sector, you may never have had the chance to see how all the different pieces of government fit together.

And here’s something else. Plenty of people that don’t work in government also do the course. And why not? You might want to understand how policy and law decisions are made, or what the bits of the machinery of government look like, or how our electoral system works. Or you might harbour secret ambitions to become an MP (go you). Maybe you work in an Embassy or High Commission around Wellington and want to get to know how we do things here. Or you might work in local government and find central government a mysterious and impenetrable beast. Or you might be looking for that perfect gift for that someone special in your life (we’re serious, just imagine getting the ‘gift of government’ on your birthday. Just wow). The list of reasons is, frankly, endless. So, if that’s you, welcome aboard.

The 5 sessions will give you confidence in:

  • the three branches of government

  • what Ministers do, and how they are given areas of government to run (portfolios)

  • how Cabinet makes big policy decisions (plus you’ll know what ‘Cabinet’ actually is!)

  • the role of Parliament in holding ministers and government agencies to account for performance

  • the MMP electoral system and how governments are formed

  • what the ‘public sector’ looks like

  • how crucial public sector officials are in helping ministers achieve good outcomes
