eLearning modules

About the modules

Our short eLearning modules are designed for people working inside government agencies so they can understand the system they’re working in.

The modules are of an introductory nature, and are suited to anyone working in the public sector. They’re fantastic as part of induction for new staff, those looking to upskill in these areas, and people looking for a refresher.

We have 3 modules currently available, with more to come. Click here for more information.

Agency licence

A government agency can purchase a yearly licence for a module. Feel free to contact us for pricing and more info.

An agency licence allows unlimited access for all staff and contractors to the module as often as they like. This allows an agency to lift its understanding of the machinery of government right across the organisation.

Each module sits on an agency’s Learning Management System (LMS). If an agency doesn’t have an LMS in place, we can host the modules securely for them.

And best of all, people can do the modules anywhere, anytime. They’re perfect for agencies looking at flexible learning options for staff.

Individual licence

You can also complete any of the modules by purchasing an individual licence using the links below.

An individual licence allows a single user to access the module for 3 months from the date of purchase.

The modules

  • Module 1: The Big Picture - An overview of NZ government

This is the perfect starter if you’re new to working in government. It will help you make sense of what you’ve just walked into!

    You’ll learn all about:

    • The Queen and Governor-General

    • Separation of powers

    • the way the Executive (i.e. ministers and State sector agencies) run the country

    • how Parliament scrutinises the performance of the Executive

    • the role the Judiciary plays in applying laws

    • the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – The Treaty of Waitangi in government

    • Political neutrality

    (approx. 60 mins, $169 + gst)

  • Module 2: The Executive - Ministers and the Public sector

This module builds on the concepts discussed in module 1 so that you can really get to grips with how government works.

Part 1 of the module explores:

    • the role of the Prime Minister

    • portfolios

    • how ministers make decisions at Cabinet and Cabinet committees

    • ministers inside and outside Cabinet

Part 2 of the module explains the main three types of government agencies: departments, Crown entities and State-owned enterprises. Understanding these differences will be a big help when you come to collaborate with other government agencies.

    (approx 90 mins, $209 + gst)

  • Module 3: Help, I have an Official Information Act request!

This fun and engaging module will be your best friend when it comes to learning how to do an OIA.

It takes you through the key requirements of the Act and best-practice tips so that you can make really good OIA decisions.

Great for people new to the OIA, and for people who have already done a few requests but haven’t received any formal training in the Act.

    The module takes you through:

    • the principle of availability of information

    • eligibility to make a request

    • broad requests (fishing expeditions)

    • transfers, timeframes and consultation

    • in-scope vs. out-of-scope

    • section 6, 9 and 18 withholding grounds

    • the Ombudsman as the OIA referee

    (approx. 90 minutes, $209 + gst)

Easy and basic information to access and understand and it was succinct enough to be interesting. Loved the sense of humour within as well. Short videos supported material.”
