Online courses

Our face-to-face workshop The insider’s guide to NZ government has developed quite the reputation in Wellington. It’s become the go-to workshop to get your head around government.

This year we’ve created a fully online version of the course. It’s the same content, just done in 6 sessions of approximately 1 hour each. The sessions are engaging, there are quizzes, FAQs, and follow-up resources for each session.

Because the sessions are on-demand, the course is totally flexible in terms of where and when people learn. In the COVID environment we now live in, this form of remote learning allows people to continue their professional development regardless of where they are.

People also love the learning methodology. Rather than sitting in a room for 1-day trying to cram in as much information as possible, our online course allows people to take their time, learn in short chunks, and ‘rewind’ to revisit previous material.

“I just wanted to send a quick email and say how beneficial I have found the sessions so far - they have been so informative and a huge support to me and my role! I also want to mention that having them online has allowed me to learn short and sharp segments of a day course, when I want and where I want - it’s brilliant! I learn better in a slower environment so being allowed the space to soak in the session content before moving onto the next segment really suited me. Thanks for rolling this out to everyone!”

How it works

The fee is $395 + gst per person. People can enrol here. Agencies can also buy bundles of licences at a reduced fee.

Further information about the course - including the ‘bundle’ licence fees and the content of each session - is available here.

We take care of all the technical stuff at our end. Once a person registers online, they’ll receive automatic email access to the 6 sessions that make up the course. And away they go. People can access the sessions through any internet browser, whether they’re at home, in the office, or on the bus!

eLearning vs. online courses

What’s the difference between our eLearning programmes and the online courses?

Think of the eLearning programmes as a ‘whole-of-agency’ resource. Our introductory eLearning programmes are available to everyone within an agency. So they can be used to lift knowledge of the machinery of government right across the agency.

These online courses are for individuals, or groups of people, looking to understand the machinery of government in more detail. It’s the equivalent of someone attending a full-day workshop (approximately 6 hours) but doing it online instead. For example, rather than running a face-to-face ‘in-house’ version of The insider’s guide to NZ government for 15 people, an agency might instead purchase 15 licences for those people to complete the course online to allow for a more flexible learning approach.

Further online courses?

We currently have one online course available - The insider’s guide to NZ government.

Later in 2020 we’ll also have available The beginner’s guide to handling an OIA request. This 4-hour course helps people understand the essential components of the Official Information Act, and gives them more confidence in handling requests. Next year we’ll be releasing a follow-up course called The OIA ‘master class’. This course will focus exclusively on the withholding grounds in the Act. Use the sign-up below and we’ll let you know when these two courses become available.
